What’s your relationship status???
This is written for Uncle Felix who has been asking the meaning of ‘It’s Complicated’ and ‘In An Open Relationship’ and everything in between… Well, I am not an expert sociologist but here’s my take…
See, the urbanites calls for choices, our coffee orders are a task on it’s own… There used to be a time that cars were only produced in one color: Black… and coffees were either Black or White! But it’s not chic enough, we need caramel or a hint of almond syrup and whether whip cream froth comes along or not is altogether a different choice… Getit?
Likewise, this trend spilled over in almost every aspect of our life… Choices upon choices… Dress colors? Hair colors? Type of pen? Heck, even our mobile phones are so complicated now, forget the functions, the mere outlook is confusing enough, flip, slide, clamshell, rotating, touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard… oh I can go on and on… but let’s not deviate… To the relationship shall we???
The olden days was easy, relationship status was either single, married or divorced. Many social networking sites adopt different approach to categorising relationship status, but on facebook, your choices are: Single, In A Relationship, Engaged, Married, It’s Complicated and In An Open Relationship. Let’s not even get to other sites that includes ‘Swinger’ as one of the status… Wow…
Single
You are not attached or in a romantic relationship with any soul on earth, probably you are just not keen in getting into relationship of any kind and committing till you find your Mr Right and Ms Right…
In A Relationship
This is where you have another half and facebook gives you the opportunity to proudly announce to the whole wide world that you are off the single’s list…
Engaged
The prelude to marriage…
Married
Well, how do I define this… oh ya… MARRIED!!!
Now comes the two quizzical status…
It’s Complicated
Some place the complicated in order to reflect their sexual preference that would otherwise be considered ‘taboo’ as they swing towards their own kind… This could also possibly come from various sort of relationship disasters… for example, a friend of mine placed this during his divorce, he is technically not married nor single and available… A friend of mine joked (but viable though) is by asking a person, what is your relationship status and if they go gazing into the far horizon and looking dazed with the question for more than 5 seconds: IT’S COMPLICATED!!!
In An Open Relationship
Somewhat plutonic, an open relationship is a relationship where one person does not own the other. The couple are not exclusively seeing each other and although sex is usually kept between the two, they can date, flirt and hook up with other people should they wish to do so, and even if that leads to sex... the other party is not allowed to question as the person does not belong to you… In a true open relationship the couple will be fully honest with each other… A relationship in which two people agree that they want to be together, but can't exactly promise that they won't see other people too. Basically, to have it all: a significant other and the freedom to hook up with other people… Common during college for many post-high school relationships but to put it in one-liner simple term: BOTH PARTIES IN THE RELATIONSHIP HAVE AGREED THAT CHEATING ON EACH OTHER IS COMPLETELY FINE AND OK…
So there you go Uncle Felix, a glimpse on the two confusing relationship status that we stumble upon… But if any of you readers have a different take on it… please take a few minutes of your time to share it with everyone in the comments…
so there can also be "in an open relationship" yet "it is complicated" :-)
